Seal pup encounter sparks debate on Formby beach

Concerned that the pup was far away from the safety of the water in an area so heavily frequented by dog walkers, Sean scooped the young pinniped up, ably assisted by his pet husky and carried it back towards the safety of the Mersey, whilst commenting on it's weight.

"It struggled at first but then relaxed when I think it realised I was helping it," he said. "It swam off."

Sean later joked about the unexpected challenge, adding: "Bloody heavy things, seals."

Concerned locals were quick to point out their view that young seals should be left alone and can carry diseases, such as the ominously named "Seal Finger", but on consultation with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue association, seal saviour Sean was given the all clear on his rescue.

With seal sightings becoming increasingly common along the Sefton coast, the encounter is a reminder that Formby's beaches are home to an incredible range of wildlife, and that even a routine walk can produce the unexpected.
