New Sainsbury's Local and Howdens in Formby nearing opening

Good news for shoppers waiting for Formby's new Sainsbury's Local.

Although Sainsbury's has still not announced an official opening date for the new Liverpool Road store, planning and recruitment documents suggest the project is now entering its final stages.

The supermarket is being created as part of the redevelopment of the former Everlast Gym building at 109–111 Liverpool Road, alongside two additional commercial units. Planning permission for the scheme was granted by Sefton Council in July 2025.

One of the biggest recent milestones was the approval of Condition 5, covering the highway works required before the store can open.

Those works include:

  • New dropped kerbs and tactile paving.

  • A widened pedestrian route into the site.

  • Closure of the existing northern pedestrian entrance.

  • A new 1.5-metre-wide pedestrian entrance.

  • Visibility improvements for vehicles leaving the car park.

Crucially, the planning permission states that no part of the development can be brought into use until these highway works have been completed. So now condition 5 has been discharged, the project is close to completion.

A keen eye Hello Formby! member also spotted a job advert for staff members on Sainsbury's website, (now since withdrawn) and an advert for various roles including a Warehouse Operative for Howden's who are occupying another unit on the site.

As always, Hello Formby will continue to keep you up to date with all local developments.
